Saving Pets One Pet at a Time began from a heartfelt story. Discover more about our inspirational founder, Kelly Bone, and her cherished dog Duncan, who inspired it all.
The mission of Saving Pets One Pet At A Time is to help pet parents make informed, safer choices by educating them on nutrition, common health risks, and holistic alternatives. Through a focus on species-appropriate diets, reducing toxic exposure, and supporting whole-body health, we aim to help dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
After losing my own dog, Duncan, to contaminated pet food and being involved in a class action lawsuit, I saw firsthand how devastating the consequences of poor nutrition and overlooked risks can be. That experience is what drives everything I do today—helping other pet parents avoid the same heartbreak and make better choices for their pets.
Our site is supported by fifteen holistic vets, a canine nutritionist and a passionate community of well educated pet owners, who have studied pet nutrition for years.
Our site is a free resource, sustained through contributions and affiliate links from the companies that we trust and personally use. This site can only stay open with your support, so please consider using our links whenever possible.

Duncan Strong!
My dog, Duncan died on 1/9/2019 from Science Diet dog food (as well as thousands of other pets who got sick and died). I was the lead plaintiff in the class action lawsuit against Hills, which we won). I sent out a warning message to every Facebook group I could find to warn them about the food. Two weeks later, Hills issued a recall and the rest is history. When I called Hills, they admitted on the phone that they killed Duncan and offered me $10 in coupons for free food for a dog I no longer had.
I got over 12,000 messages from pet parents who all had sick/dead pets and I didn’t know what to do to help them. Thankfully, I met a few holistic vets and very knowledgeable pet advocates who helped me during those first 60 days. They encouraged me to start a Facebook group and Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time (The Original) was born. I continue to do this because of the terrible guilt I have about killing Duncan unknowingly, and also to honor his memory. Amazingly, this cute little dog has saved THOUSANDS of pets over the last 7 years and counting.
I have spent countless hours taking pet nutrition courses, studying, attending pet conferences, etc. Fortunately I have befriended many holistic vets, who I have learned from as well — I really need to get a life! I spend entirely too much time doing Saving Pets and running our Facebook group as well as participating in conferences and doing interviews. Now my group has close to 181,000 members and I was honored to receive Pet Parent Champion of the Year at Dr. Judy Morgan’s 2025 Naturally Healthy Pet Conference.
Participating in the lawsuit and getting the pet food tested was extremely stressful. These big pet food manufacturers do not play fairly and they have deep pockets. There were so many terrible things that happened over that two year period as a result of this lawsuit it solidified my belief that they have no regards for our pets — only our money.
Here is what would I recommend pet parents do to ensure their pets are healthy as possible:
I live a life of could have, would have, should have…..I don’t want others to do this and live with this guilt. Learn from Duncan and myself. Thanks to Duncan, I live a very holistic life now and I research EVERYTHING I feed my family, put on our bodies, and use in our home. That’s Duncan’s legacy.
Do it for Duncan. Do it for yourself and your loved ones. God bless you all.

I cannot tell you how honored and humbled I am to have received the Pet Champion of the Year from the Holistic Vet of the Decade, Dr. Judy Morgan. I was recognized for this based on my efforts to educate pet parents on pet food and health and based on how many pets my Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time (The ORIGINAL) group has saved.
Additionally, my friend Susan Thixton who I admire and respect tremendously received the Pet Advocate of the Year award from her (She is the owner of The Truth About Pet Food) and is the foremost expert on pet food and is absolutely brilliant.
For me to be on the stage with these two tremendous women was such an honor and a moment I will never forget. On the statue, Judy put a picture of Duncan, which made me start crying. It was an incredible pinch me moment.
If any of you have pets and you want to keep them healthy please join my SAVING PETS ONE PET @ A TIME (THE ORIGINAL) or OFFICIAL DR. JUDY MORGAN’S NATURALLY HEALTHY PETS GROUP or follow THE TRUTH ABOUT PET FOOD on the web.
I have recently thought about discontinuing my efforts. Now I am more energized and determined than ever to continue to educate pet parents so they don’t go through what I did with Duncan (dying from Science Diet).
Thank you, Dr. Judy Morgan you really did something special for me and I truly appreciate it.
– Kelly Bone
As the lead plaintiff, Kelly spearheaded the legal efforts against Hill’s Science Diet. Following an extensive 3,000 hours of litigation, a settlement was finally reached. On July 12, 2021 a Federal judge approved an initial $12.5 million settlement against Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Varieties of dog food sold by Hill’s Pet Nutrition contained dangerous levels of Vitamin D, leading to many sick pets and even deaths. The limited recall that Hill’s did involved approximately 675,000 cases of canned dog food. Hill’s was aware of the problem and should have instituted a recall much earlier and more widespread across their product line, which was the basis of the lawsuit
