Allergies are common in dogs and cats and often show up as itching, ear problems, paw licking, or digestive upset. These symptoms happen when the immune system becomes overreactive to things like food, environmental triggers, or insect bites. But allergies are rarely just a surface issue — they often reflect deeper imbalances in the gut, immune system, or overall health. Understanding the root cause is key to helping your pet find lasting relief, not just temporary symptom control.
Does your pet have itchy, red skin, or smell like Fritos, or frequent ear infections? The first thing you need to look at is the gut and their diet.
Pets can develop intolerances to environmental allergens and pet food ingredients.
An intolerance test or an elimination diet can help you narrow down the cause.
You feel like “you’ve tried everything.” Have you tried an elimination diet, intolerance test or fecal microbiota transplant (FMT)?
Just like people, dogs and cats can develop allergies when their immune system overreacts to certain substances called allergens. These allergens can come from food, the environment, insect bites, or even things around the home. Allergies often show up as itchy skin, ear infections, tummy troubles, or general discomfort.
One of the most common types is environmental allergies, also called atopic dermatitis. Pets may react to pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds, as well as dust mites, mold spores, or even certain grasses. These symptoms can flare up seasonally or continue all year if indoor triggers are involved.
Food allergies are another possibility. Many pets react to specific proteins such as beef, chicken, dairy, wheat, soy, or eggs. Signs can include skin irritation, ear infections, itching and flea allergy dermatitis is especially uncomfortable. For sensitive pets, even one flea bite can cause intense itching, redness, and skin infections. Preventing fleas is especially important if your dog or cat is allergic.
Some pets also struggle with contact allergies. This happens when their skin reacts to direct contact with things like certain fabrics, plastics, plants, or cleaning products, leading to irritation and itching where the substance touched their body.
There are also other potential allergens, such as insect bites (besides fleas), certain medications, and even household items like cleaning products, perfumes, or cigarette smoke. See our pet safe household products.
When it comes to food, many pets do best when rotated through different proteins rather than eating the same one all the time. Lightly cooked or raw diets can also be gentler on sensitive pets, as long as they’re balanced and appropriate for their needs.
Cytopoint and Apoquel are two widely used treatments for managing itchy skin in dogs. Cytopoint is an injectable antibody that specifically blocks the itch signal, offering targeted relief with minimal immune suppression, while Apoquel is an oral medication that reduces both itching and inflammation by modulating the immune system. Both are effective but can have side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and, in Apoquel’s case, increased infection risk. Alternatives include cyclosporine, antihistamines, allergy shots, and certain natural supplements, which may be used alone or alongside these medications. We personally would never give Cytopoint or Apoquel unless it was the last resort. There are many other good holistic alternataves which are equally effective and safer. Visit our Apoquel and Cytopoint page for more information.

Reducing your dog’s exposure to environmental allergens and chemicals starts at the point of contact — the paws. Every time your dog walks outside, they pick up pollen, chemicals, mold, and other irritants that can trigger itching and inflammation.
Foot soaks are far more effective than simply wiping paws. Wiping tends to just move debris around and rarely reaches deep between the toes and nail beds where irritants settle. A proper soak helps lift, dilute, and remove what’s actually sitting on the skin.
How you do a soak can be simple and adjusted to your dog. For larger dogs, a small bucket works well to soak one paw at a time. For smaller dogs, a sink or shallow basin is usually easiest.
This soak combines several supportive ingredients. Green tea provides antioxidants to calm the skin. Apple cider vinegar helps reduce yeast and bacteria. Epsom salts can soothe irritation, and if needed, a small amount of povidone iodine adds extra antimicrobial support.
Detoxifying Paw Soak Recipe
4 organic green tea bags
1/2 cup raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup Epsom salts
1 quart filtered water
Optional: 1 tablespoon povidone iodine (Betadine)
Directions
Bring the water to a boil, then remove from heat. Add the tea bags and Epsom salts, stirring until dissolved. Let it steep and cool completely. Remove the tea bags, then add the apple cider vinegar and optional povidone iodine.
Pour the solution into a bowl deep enough to submerge one paw at a time up to the wrist. Let each paw soak for about 30 seconds, allowing the solution to reach through the fur and between the toes. Remove the paw and gently pat dry. Do not rinse. Repeat for all four paws.
This is one of those simple routines that can make a noticeable difference, especially during allergy season or after time outside.

Allergies and itching in dogs and cats are commonly triggered by food sensitivities, environmental allergens (like pollen, dust mites, or mold), flea bites, or an imbalanced gut microbiome. Chronic itching is often a sign of underlying inflammation. Diet quality, synthetic additives, and ultra-processed foods can contribute to immune dysregulation and skin flare-ups over time.
No. While food allergies can cause itching, many pets react to environmental triggers such as grass, dust, seasonal pollen, or household chemicals. Secondary yeast overgrowth is also common in itchy pets. Identifying the root cause often requires evaluating diet, environment, gut health, and skin barrier integrity — not just switching proteins.
A holistic approach focuses on reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system from the inside out. This often includes feeding a moisture-rich, minimally processed diet, removing synthetic additives, improving gut health with targeted probiotics, supporting the skin barrier with omega-3 fatty acids, and addressing environmental triggers. Managing yeast and rebuilding microbiome balance are often key components.
