Pet Nutritionists

canine Nutritionists and Pet coaches… oh my!

When considering a consult with a pet nutritionist or coach, remember: not all heroes wear capes, and not all sources are reliable! A sprinkle of caution can serve you better than a full bowl of kibble in these unregulated fields.

Need nutrition advice? Now what?!

There are many canine nutritionists and holistic pet coaches offering their services on the internet. Be aware, that this industry is unregulated and anyone can call themselves a nutritionist or holistic coach. We have reviewed numerous formulated recipes that “nutritionists” have recommended to our members and they are not balanced recipes that offer the appropriate nutrients. The majority of them have taken a few nutrition classes and deem themselves a “nutritionist.” They are also not equipped to give medical advice, but often do. So Buyer Beware and only hire someone who has trusted recommendations.

Canine nutritionists often charge the same fee as a holistic vet. We have several holistic vets as moderators who do online consults for a fee that can also assist with nutritional advice. You can find our recommended veterinarians here.

What should you do if you need nutrition advice?

  • Pet parents should become knowledgeable in pet food ingredients and nutrition. We have a lot of training in Pet Food category in our online Learning.
  • One of the most important things a pet parent can do is to learn how to read and understand pet food labels and ingredients. You should also watch the PET FOOLED DOCUMENTARY on streaming services.
  • We strongly encourage you to take some pet nutrition courses to preserve your pets health. There are also several nutritional training courses we recommend. Prices are set by the individual businesses and prices are subject to change from what we have listed.

If you decide to hire a canine nutritionist or holistic pet coach, we encourage you to do the following:

  1. Ask for copies of their certifications.
  2. Verify how many hours of training they have had.
  3. Check references.
  4. Read the waivers they expect you to sign.
  5. Understand initial fees and follow up costs as well.
  6. We do recommend this certified canine nutritionist – Kara Hanrahan. You can find out more on her website OR email her directly.
