S. boulardii is a special probiotic that’s a strain of yeast, not bacteria. Studies have shown that S. boulardii is safe and effective for cats and dogs, and that it can prevent and reduce diarrhea from multiple causes. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. As a probiotic, it is especially helpful for regrowing gut microbe populations that have become imbalanced, and for promoting healthy skin.
Unlike bacterial probiotics, S. boulardii isn’t affected by antibiotics, so it can also be used during antibiotic treatment to help with the digestive side effects that antibiotics often cause. Studies have shown that when S. boulardii is given along with an antibiotic, pets are much less likely to develop diarrhea as a result of the medication.

Pet Food Toxicity Protocol Guidelines
Mold exposure can affect dogs and cats through the air they breathe, surfaces in their environment, and contaminated food. Mold thrives in damp environments and may be hidden behind walls, under flooring, around windows, in HVAC systems, or anywhere there has been water damage or persistent moisture.
Some molds can also produce mycotoxins, toxic compounds that may cause illness when inhaled or ingested. Pets may be especially vulnerable because they spend more time close to floors, carpeting, dust, and other surfaces where mold spores and contaminated particles can accumulate.
Symptoms vary depending on the type and amount of exposure, the individual pet, and whether mold spores or mycotoxins are involved. Possible signs can include:
Coughing, wheezing, sneezing, or nasal discharge
Watery, irritated, or itchy eyes
Itchy, red, or irritated skin
Excessive licking or scratching
Recurrent ear or skin problems
Lethargy or unusual fatigue
Decreased appetite
Tremors, weakness, poor coordination, or seizures with certain mycotoxin exposures
Respiratory distress, collapse, significant tremors, seizures, or other sudden neurological symptoms require immediate veterinary care.
Mold exposure does not only come from the home. Certain molds can grow on grains, nuts, seeds, and other agricultural ingredients before or after harvesting. Some produce mycotoxins such as aflatoxins, which can contaminate pet food ingredients.
Aflatoxin poisoning can cause serious liver injury in dogs and cats. Symptoms may include loss of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, jaundice, bruising, or abnormal bleeding.
Never feed food that smells musty, appears moldy, has gotten wet, or has been stored improperly. Keep pet food in a cool, dry location and pay attention to manufacturer recalls. If you suspect this, visit our pet food toxicity page.
Finding and correcting the source of moisture is one of the most important steps. Simply cleaning visible mold without correcting a leak, water intrusion, excessive humidity, or another moisture problem may allow it to return.
If significant mold or water damage is suspected, consider having the home evaluated by a qualified professional. Keep pets away from contaminated areas during cleanup or remediation, and avoid exposing them to airborne dust and mold spores.
Wash pet bedding, blankets, washable toys, bowls, and other frequently used items. HEPA air filtration and HEPA vacuuming may also help reduce airborne particles and contaminated household dust, but they should complement—not replace—removal of the underlying moisture and mold source.
Once ongoing exposure has been addressed, nutrition and overall health can play an important role in recovery. Focus on a fresh, species-appropriate, nutritionally complete diet, adequate hydration, healthy digestion, and appropriate antioxidant and immune support.
Depending on your pet’s symptoms and veterinary findings, a holistic or integrative veterinarian may also consider individualized nutritional, gastrointestinal, liver, or immune support. We prefer a targeted approach rather than aggressive “detox” protocols, especially when a pet is already ill. Dr. Judy Morgan’s Mold Exposure Protocol may be helpful.
If symptoms persist, talk with your veterinarian about evaluating other possible causes as well. Respiratory, skin, gastrointestinal, and neurological symptoms can have many causes, so mold exposure should not automatically be assumed to be responsible simply because mold has been found in the home.
The most important first step is always the same: identify the exposure, remove your pet from it whenever possible, and address the source.

“Ways to Detox Your Dog or Cat Recap”
Detox for dogs and cats does not mean forcing toxins out with harsh cleanses. It means supporting the body’s natural detox pathways — primarily the liver, kidneys, gut, and lymphatic system — so they can efficiently process and eliminate waste. A fresh, species-appropriate diet, proper hydration, and reducing inflammatory triggers are the foundation of safe detox support.
Pets may benefit from detox support after vaccines, antibiotics, anesthesia, flea and tick medications, or environmental exposure to chemicals and mold. Chronic inflammation, digestive upset, skin issues, or sluggish energy can also indicate that detox pathways need support. The goal is not aggressive cleansing but gentle, consistent support of normal elimination systems.
Detox should always be approached carefully, especially in seniors or pets with liver, kidney, or chronic disease. Overstimulating detox pathways can cause discomfort or worsening symptoms. The safest approach focuses on improving diet quality, supporting gut health, and gently nourishing the liver rather than using aggressive detox protocols.
