Holistic Dog & Cat Food: Raw and Gently Cooked Recommendations by Country

Confused about what to feed? You aren't alone. That's one of our most frequently asked questions. Learn what we feed our own pets and some great options for you to choose from as well. We have recomendations for the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia. We also offer advice on how to evaluate pet foods that you may be consdering. Happy hunting…

Dogs and cats need moisture in their diet. A raw or gently cooked diet is best and can help you prevent a multitude of health issues.

Pets who eat highly processed food are getting very few nutrients. They are surviving, not thriving.

Your pet won’t eat raw? Some pets can’t tolerate raw food, but gently cooked is just as healthy and may be more palatable for them.

It’s not an all or nothing approach. If time or cost is an issue and you feel you can’t afford raw or gently cooked or don’t have the time you can do these things:

  1. Freshen up the bowl with protein and fresh veggies and fruits
  2. Go to butchers, Asian markets, raw suppliers online to find great options. Go to our RAW FEEDING page for more tips!

Choosing a healthy, nutritious pet food can feel overwhelming, especially with so many marketing claims competing for attention. Our goal is to make the process easier by looking beyond the front of the bag and examining ingredients, sourcing, processing, transparency, nutritional information, and recall history. We’ve reviewed a wide range of dog and cat foods and created recommendations based on foods we would feel comfortable feeding our own pets. Our reviews include options available in the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia.

We’re often told that some of the foods we recommend are expensive. Higher-quality ingredients and less-processed foods can cost more, but nutrition is also an important part of long-term health. We won’t recommend a food simply because it is inexpensive if it doesn’t meet our standards. For pet parents working within a budget, we also share ways to improve the nutritional quality of the bowl with fresh whole-food additions and healthier toppers.

We base our pet food reviews and recommendations on the following holistic criteria (see our for short video):

  • Ingredient sourcing and transparency — Does the company clearly explain where its ingredients come from?
  • Ingredient quality — Are the ingredients recognizable, nutrient-dense, and appropriate for dogs or cats?
  • Processing method — We generally favor less-processed options such as raw, gently cooked, freeze-dried, or air-dried foods when appropriate.
  • Synthetic vitamin and mineral load — We look at whether nutrients come primarily from whole-food ingredients or rely heavily on added premixes.
  • Human-grade vs. feed-grade ingredients — When clearly documented by the manufacturer, human-grade sourcing can be a positive indicator of ingredient standards, but it is only one part of the overall evaluation.
  • Organic and GMO-conscious sourcing — We give preference to foods using organic or non-GMO ingredients when possible.
  • Nutritional transparency — Does the manufacturer provide a detailed nutritional analysis or willingly share one when contacted?
  • Recall history — We review the company’s recall history and how transparently it handled any past safety issues.
  • Species-appropriate formulation — Does the food provide appropriate protein, fat, minerals, and overall nutrition for dogs or cats?
  • Company transparency — Is the company open about manufacturing, sourcing, formulation, and quality-control practices?

How We Evaluate Dog & Cat Food: Our Holistic Review Criteria

Do Your Research When Choosing a Pet Food

Dog & Cat Food We Actually Recommend (And Feed Ourselves)

We have carefully developed these pet food recommendations for cats and dogs in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Our list includes options such as raw, gently cooked, and freeze-dried diets. Some products contain synthetic vitamins, while others do not — with non-synthetic options generally being the healthier choice. You can learn more about synthetic vitamins here. See our graphics at the bottom of this page for more information.

Keep in mind that pet foods can change at a moments notice. They may have a recall, the pet food manufacturer may change the ingredients or packaging, or the company may be aquired by another company (usually when this occurs the quality degrades.  It’s up to the pet parent to pay attention to this and do your research.

Moving Beyond Kibble: Real Food Options for Dogs & Cats

We cannot, in good conscience, recommend traditional kibble. Most kibble is produced with feed-grade ingredients, and even the few options made with human-grade materials are not particularly healthy choices for pets.

One exception we do recommend is CARNA4, an air-baked food with a texture similar to kibble but made with higher-quality standards.

We also recognize that some pet parents may continue feeding kibble for a variety of reasons — whether health-related, financial, or personal. If that’s the case for you, we encourage you to visit our Kibble and More page, where you’ll find guidance on how to “freshen up” kibble and make your pet’s bowl healthier.

Finally, we highly recommend watching the Pet Fooled documentary on YouTube. It’s an eye-opening look at the pet food industry — and one your pet will ultimately benefit from.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing the Best Dog & Cat Food

Holistic dog food typically focuses on whole-food ingredients, higher-quality protein sources, and less intensive processing. Many conventional kibble are ultra-processed and rely on synthetic additives to replace nutrients lost during manufacturing. Raw, gently cooked, air-dried, or freeze-dried options often preserve more natural nutrients and may be easier for some dogs to digest. The right choice depends on the individual dog, but food quality and processing method matter.

A truly holistic dog food prioritizes species-appropriate protein levels, transparent sourcing, minimal synthetic fortification, and low levels of ultra-processed ingredients. It avoids artificial preservatives, dyes, and heavily refined seed oils. Holistic nutrition looks at the whole animal — digestion, immune function, skin health, and long-term metabolic support — not just meeting minimum nutrient standards.

Some dogs experience improvement in skin, stool quality, and overall digestion when switched to minimally processed, limited-ingredient diets. Removing artificial additives, highly refined carbohydrates, and low-quality fats may reduce inflammatory triggers in sensitive dogs. While diet is not a cure-all, food quality plays a foundational role in immune and gut health.
