Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs and Cats: Symptoms and Holistic Support

Mast cell tumors are common skin cancers in dogs and can also occur in cats, often causing inflammation due to histamine release. Holistic care focuses on fresh nutrition, immune support, and reducing triggers that may worsen symptoms. Conventional treatment may still be needed, with holistic support used alongside it for recovery and overall health.

A raw or gently cooked diet is best with anti-inflammatory proteins such as turkey, duck, or rabbit.

A gentle detox every three months with Adored Beast Liver Tonic or milk thistle will help detox the body.

Do not vaccinate (titer test instead).  Also, do not give traditional flea & tick, heartworm treatments. Avoid household cleaners and candles.

A Holistic Approach to Mast Cell Tumors:

Mast cell tumors are one of the most common skin cancers seen in dogs and can also occur in cats. They develop from mast cells, which are part of the immune system and play an important role in responding to allergens and parasites. When mast cells become abnormal, they can form tumors and release substances like histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. This release can cause redness, swelling, itching, digestive upset, and other symptoms throughout the body.

A Holistic Approach to Mast Cell Tumors

A holistic approach focuses on supporting the immune system, reducing inflammation, and minimizing triggers that may encourage mast cell activity, while still recognizing when conventional care is needed.

Diet Matters

Nutrition plays a major role in immune balance and inflammation control.

Fresh, whole foods are preferred, with raw or gently cooked diets often being the best option. Highly processed foods, especially high-carbohydrate kibble, may contribute to inflammation and are best avoided. Many pets do well on anti-inflammatory proteins such as turkey, duck, or rabbit. If your pet is sensitive, it may also help to limit foods that can trigger histamine release, such as fermented foods or certain fish products.

Natural Anti-Inflammatory Support

Certain natural compounds can help stabilize mast cells and reduce histamine release. Quercetin (Four Leaf Rover Harmony (10% coupon off full priced items SAVING-PETS) is often referred to as “nature’s Benadryl” because of its ability to calm histamine reactions. Turmeric, specifically its active compound curcumin, offers powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support when paired with healthy fats and black pepper for absorption. Medicinal mushrooms such as turkey tail and reishi are commonly used to support immune balance, and omega-3 fatty acids from clean sources like algae oil or wild fish can help reduce systemic inflammation.

Supplements That Support Healing

Some supplements may help regulate inflammation and support normal cell behavior. Pet-specific, full-spectrum CBD is often used for its calming and immune-modulating properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine and homeopathic remedies may also be beneficial when selected by a trained holistic veterinarian and tailored to your pet’s individual needs.

Gentle Detox Support

Supporting the body’s natural detox pathways can be helpful. Herbs such as milk thistle or dandelion root may assist the liver in processing excess histamine and environmental toxins. Adequate hydration and appropriate daily movement also support healthy circulation and elimination.

Reducing Environmental Triggers

Limiting toxin exposure can reduce the burden on the immune system. Many pet parents choose to avoid synthetic flea and tick products, harsh household cleaners, and unnecessary chemical exposures. Discussing vaccine titers with your veterinarian may help determine appropriate vaccination schedules. Clean, filtered water and natural pest control options can also make a difference.

When Conventional Care Is Needed

Not all mast cell tumors behave the same way. Some can be aggressive or fast-growing and may require surgical removal. Holistic support can be used alongside conventional treatment, both before and after surgery, to support healing, reduce side effects, and help lower the risk of recurrence.

Work With a Holistic Veterinarian

Every pet is unique. A holistic veterinarian can help create an individualized plan based on your pet’s age, tumor grade, overall health, and medical history. Combining thoughtful nutrition, targeted supplements, and appropriate veterinary care offers the most supportive path forward.

Recommendations:

This is what we would do:

  1. If you think your dog may have cancer, consider doing an Oncotect Cancer Screening Test for Dogs.
  2. Consult with a holistic vet. If you don’t have one look at our veterinary referral page.
  3. We personally would not do a fine needle aspiration until we consulted with a holistic veterinarian. Aspirating can make the cancer spread.
  4. Ensure your pet has ample hydration. We recommend bone broth. You can also give Beam Minerals Complete Minerals and Electrolyte Set (20% coupon: SAVINGPETS) or the Beam Minerals Advanced Feline Mineral and Electrolyte Set (20% coupon: SAVINGPETS)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions Regarding Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs & Cats

Mast cell tumors often appear as a lump on the skin that may change size quickly. In dogs, the lump can become red, swollen, itchy, or even ulcerated. Some tumors grow slowly, while others enlarge rapidly. Because mast cells release histamine, pets may also show vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset. Any new lump that changes in size or appearance should be evaluated by a veterinarian and tested with a fine needle aspirate. We personally would not do a fine needle aspiration until we consulted with a holistic veterinarian. Aspirating can make the cancer spread.

In dogs, mast cell tumors can range from low-grade (slow growing and less likely to spread) to high-grade (more aggressive and more likely to metastasize). The grade of the tumor significantly affects prognosis. In cats, many cutaneous mast cell tumors are less aggressive than in dogs, but splenic or visceral forms require prompt medical attention. Early diagnosis and proper grading are key to determining the best treatment plan.

While diet and supplements do not cure mast cell tumors, a fresh, minimally processed, species-appropriate diet may help reduce inflammatory burden and support immune balance. Because mast cells release histamine, some pets benefit from avoiding highly processed foods and artificial additives. Nutritional support, immune-modulating supplements, and liver support can be used alongside conventional treatment to support overall resilience and quality of life.
