Who makes your pet food?

The manufacturers of pet food may surprise you. From major candy companies to a powerful cleaning products corporation and even a notable cereal brand. Why does this matter?

Pet food manufacturers are not required to tell you when they change the ingredients or packaging. Be vigilant, pet parents!

Pet food companies get bought out by larger conglomerates frequently. When this happens the quality degrades.

Follow your pet food manufacturer on social media, etc. If they are acquired by another company, pay close attention to any changes on the ingredient label or packaging over the next two years.

Any pet food manufacturer owned by Nestle, Colgate Palmolive, MARS, Post Holdings, General Mills and Schell & Kempeter is not good quality nutritious food.

Things you need to know…

It’s important to understand that many pet food manufacturers source their ingredients and vitamin premixes from a select group of suppliers. This means that when quality issues arise, they can impact several brands and their individual product lines. Additionally, many pet food manufacturers own multiple pet food companies. It is crucial for pet parents to stay informed, as these manufacturers are not obligated to alert consumers when they make changes to their ingredients or labels. In fact most don’t!

It is also important to understand that big business operates with a focus on profit. The bottom line drives decisions, so it’s important to recognize that your pet is not their highest priority!

Most people do not realize that a few very large corporations own the majority of popular pet food brands. Are you one of those people? They own a lot of our US veterinary hospitals too but that’s a conversation for another time…

Recommendations:

  1. Check your pet food manufacturers website and social media accounts monthly for any updates or google them.
  2. Ultra processed food (aka kibble) is the most likely food to be owned by a conglomerate who could care less about your pets health.
  3. Raw and gently-cooked diets are almost always owned by small companies and offer better quality nutritious food options.
